The El- Pergola Legal Theatre is a unique branch of the El-Pergola Puppet Theater, conceptualized by Rania Refaat and inspired by the principles of the Theater of the Oppressed. Drawing from her experience as a lawyer, Rania recognized the societal challenges stemming from a lack of legal awareness, particularly in issues affecting women.
This innovative form of theatre combines puppetry with legal education, creating an interactive platform where audiences actively participate. Each performance begins with a short puppet sketch highlighting a specific issue. The audience then engages by manipulating the puppets, followed by the “Joker,” who explains the relevant legal provisions and their implications.
The Legal Theatre has achieved remarkable success in Egypt, presenting its performances in schools, universities, streets, and marginalized areas., collaborating with organizations such as CARE International, British council, Afac and the HarassMap initiative. It has also gained recognition in Berlin, Germany, working with Arab refugee groups and partnering with institutions like the Schaubude Theatre.
Rania documented this groundbreaking approach in a book detailing the El- Pergola Legal Theatre methodology, published in Arabic with support from the AFAC Foundation and translated into English and German with backing from the Berlin Senate. Through this work, Rania continues to merge creativity with advocacy, empowering communities through art and knowledge.
